This module will explore the physiology of cancer cells and what drives cellular replication, the genes that may be involved, functional testing to aid in treatment, nutritional deficiencies commonly implicated in cancer, optimal dietary and nutritional strategies for cancer patients and how environmental toxins may be involved. 

The learning outcomes for this module are:

  • Outline the biological mechanisms of cancer, including genetics, gene regulation, cell cycle, oncogenes, cellular proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis
  • Recognise the current cancer epidemiology including diagnostic options and individual treatment options
  • Discuss the role of the GP in cancer care and referral options
  • Discuss testing options for cancer care in general practice understanding both the benefits and limitations of each
  • Explore the different potential diets recommended in cancer care, identifying benefits and limitations for each
  • Identify nutritional supplements that may be considered during preventative, active and secondary prevention cancer care
  • List aspects to consider when setting up an integrative cancer clinic
